Northbridge’s Vallee to Celebrate 70 Years With Maryknoll

Northbridge, Massachusetts native, Sister Vivian Vallee, an artist, teacher and pastoral worker in Japan will celebrate her 70th Jubilee as a Maryknoll Sister on Sunday, February 14, with a mass at 10:30 a.m. in the Main Chapel at he Maryknoll Sisters Center in Ossining, New York. 

Vallee is one of 21 Maryknoll Sisters marking 70 years with the congregation in 2016. Four other sisters will celebrate 50 years with Maryknoll at a separate Mass on Sunday, May 29. 

Sister Vivian Vallee 

Valle was born in Northbridge, Massachusetts in 1926 and graduated in 1944 from Whitin-Lasell High School in Whitinsville. Vallee then studies Art at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. 

Vallee entered the Maryknoll Sisters in 1946 from St. Patrick's Parish in Whitinsville and made her first profession of vows in 1949. Vallee was assigned to Kyoto, Japan in 1950 where she studied the Japanese language and worked in the Sisters vestment department. 

Vallee returned to the Maryknoll Sisters Center in New York in 1960 and remained to study for her B.S. in education at Mary Rogers College. She returned to Japan in 1964 where she did pastoral ministry. 

Vivian again returned to the United States  in 1990 to work at the Maryknoll Sisters Convent in Monrovia, California where she lived until she was assigned to a newly established community in Connecticut from 1994 to 1999. 

Vallee presently resides in the Maryknoll Sisters Center.

Maryknoll Sisters was founded in 1912 and is the first U.S. based congregation of Roman Catholic women religious dedicated to foreign mission.
