One Man Shot During Brawl in Worcester Tuesday Night

Thursday, May 05, 2016

One man was shot during a large fight on Merrick Street involving 12 to 15 people on Tuesday night at approximately 11 p.m. The man suffered a wound to the lower extremity and was taken to the hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The Incident

Multiple Police units responded to the area of 66 Merrick Street on Tuesday, May 3 after Shotspotter activation reported numerous rounds fired.

Upon arrival, officers encountered several witnesses and established a crime scene close to where the gun detection system reported the shots. Officers were told that two vehicles were seen leaving the area after the shots were fired. Officers were then told that approximately 12 to 15 people were fighting just prior to the shots being fired.

Officers secured the area, including a home that was hit by a stray bullet. The bullet entered the dwelling but no injuries were reported from the scene.

At approximately 11:44 p.m. Police dispatchers were informed that a male called for Worcester EMS, from a Vernon Street address, reporting that he was shot.

Officers responded to that location and determined that the victim was involved in Merrick Street altercation. The victim received a wound to the lower extremity and was taken to a local hospital.

Police located the vehicles that were involved. One vehicle had several bullet holes and was towed to police headquarters for processing.

Police detectives responded to the scene and took control of the investigation.
