The Incident

On Friday, July 7 at approximately 2:10 p.m., Worcester Police responded to Commerce Bank, located at 993 Grafton Street for a report of a woman attempting to cash a fake check. Upon the officers arrival they observed a woman walking out of the bank followed by one of the bank employees. The employee pointed to the woman as the officers exited their cars. The officer asked the woman to stop which she did at first. The officer explained to the woman why they were there and asked her if she would come back inside the bank to discuss the matter with bank employees. The woman pulled away from the officer and began to run away.

Two officers gave chase to the woman and ended up in the AutoZone parking lot. Once in the lot the woman attempted to enter a black Honda Accord. She opened the rear passenger door. Officers could see that a man was sitting in the rear seat. Officers caught up to the woman and grabbed onto her. At this time the Honda drove off. After a brief physical struggle the woman was placed in handcuffs. She was identified as Gonsalves.

The officers were able to call out the vehicle description and the registration plate prior to it driving out of the parking lot. The vehicle was last seen traveling west on Grafton Street. A few moments later another officer nearby spotted the Honda and signaled it to stop by 725 Grafton Street. Officers approached the car and discovered that only the driver was inside. The back seat male passenger had exited the car somewhere prior to being stopped.

The driver of the Honda was identified as Guerrero.

Officers spoke with bank employees. The officers were told that Gonsalves entered their bank and attempted to cash a fake check that belonged to a business in Boston. The bank was aware that a short time prior to this incident Guerrero did cash a fake check at another Commerce Bank located at Gold Star Blvd. Bank employees were made aware to be on the lookout for these checks as it had just been discovered that 5 individuals in all attempted to cash the same checks in Worcester, Milford, Westboro and Boston.

Gonsalves and Guerrero were both placed under arrest and Both suspects will be arraigned on Monday, July 10, 2017 at the Worcester County District Courthouse.
