Tuesday, June 20, 2017
Essau Chagoha, 43, was charged with Mayhem, Assault, and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon, Armed Robbery, Strangulation and Misleading an Investigation.
The Incident
On Sunday, June 18, at approximately 5:52 a.m., Worcester Police responded to an apartment within the city for a report of an injured woman needing assistance. Upon the officer's arrival, they met with a 23-year-old woman. The woman was upset and crying. Officers saw that she had a swollen neck with visible hand prints on her neck. The officers also saw that her forehead and knees were swollen.
The victim told the officers that she and a friend were at a party on Crystal Street. During the party her friend started to get harassed and assaulted. The victim said that she tried to intervene. At this point a man, later identified as Chagoha of 18 Crystal Street, approached her and grabbed her throat with one hand and squeezed until she could no longer breathe. During this attack, Chagoha was holding a knife in his other hand and ended up cutting one of her fingers as she attempted to remove his hand from her neck. Chagoha punched her in the throat while an unknown second person punched her in the back of the head. Chagoha grabbed her phone to prevent her from calling police. The victim was eventually able to flee the apartment.
The victim was treated at the scene by Worcester EMS and then transported to a local hospital. Officers followed the victim to the hospital. Once in the emergency room it was discovered that a 22-year-old man was being treated at another hospital for a substantial laceration to his face and to his feet. This man is the friend of the female. Police went to the second hospital to speak with the male.
The man provided misleading information.
It was discovered that the male was at the same party as the female and was slashed inside the apartment on Crystal Street. Medical personnel stated that the wounds required numerous sutures to close.
Police went to 18 Crystal Street and met with Chagoha. Evidence within the apartment supported the allegations that the altercation took place there. WPD detectives and Crime Scene personnel responded to the Crystal Street apartment.
Both victims were released from the hospital after receiving treatment.
Chagoha was placed under arrest.
