The Incident
On Friday, April 13, at approximately 1:33 p.m., Worcester Police responded to 23 Haviland Street for a report that two people were hurt when they were hit by a tow truck. The first arriving officer saw one man on the ground bleeding heavily from his head and a second man suffering from what appeared to be serious injuries.
The preliminary investigation indicated that the two men were attempting to load a 1998 Honda Accord onto the flatbed truck that was to be towed away.
During the loading procedure, the flatbed truck started to roll down Haviland Street. At this time the owner of the truck attempted to run after the moving vehicle and enter the cab, in an effort to stop it, but slipped onto the ground and was run over.
The second man was positioned on top of the bed of the truck and fell off as the truck gained momentum. The second man was also run over by the truck before it crashed into a tree.
The 1995 International flatbed truck was towed from the scene and will have a full mechanical inspection conducted as part of the investigation.
