Man Arrested After Breaking Into The Vintage Grill in Worcester

Wednesday, December 07, 2016

A man broke into The Vintage Grill on Shrewsbury Street in Worcester before police caught him driving away from the scene.

James Bishop, 50, of 49 William Street was initially charged with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.

Due to his close proximity to the break in, the time of the morning with minimal traffic, along with the car that matched the description of the suspect car, and the fact that the gloves, wooden rubber tip handle, and the cutout cardboard was in the vehicle, Bishop was additionally charged with being in possession of burglarious Instruments.

The investigation is ongoing.

The Incident

On Tuesday, December 6, at approximately 2:44 a.m., Worcester Police responded 346 Shrewsbury Street, The Vintage Grill, for a report of a commercial alarm that had activated. One officer responding had knowledge that a gray Pontiac G6 was a suspect car that had been involved in recent commercial break-ins. As the officer was responding to this call he saw a gray Pontiac G6 traveling west on Shrewsbury Street. The officer was heading east. The officer turned around and got behind the Pontiac. The Pontiac was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Shrewsbury and Shamrock Streets. When the light turned green the officer activated his emergency lights and conducted a car stop.

The officer approached the driver’s door and spoke with the driver. He was identified as James Bishop, 50, of 49 William Street. The officer saw a pair of black gloves and a long wooden handle with a rubber end cap on the front passenger seat. This device could be used to smash windows. Bishop was removed from his car. Meanwhile, other officers responded to the business and confirmed that a break had in fact happened as a window to the side door of the business had been smashed. Police at the scene saw a cash register drawer removed from the register and thrown to the floor. There were numerous change and gift cards on the floor and the Keno drawer was opened and ransacked, however, nothing appeared to have been taken.

Officers at the car stop also saw scotch tape on the rear license plate. Inside the car was a cardboard cutout that fit perfectly over the license plate. Officers believed that the cardboard was there to possibly conceal the registration plate.

The officer ran a check on Bishop’s license status and it was determined that he was driving  the car with a suspended license.

Investigators will continue to look into security film footage of nearby businesses along with evidence discovered at the scene to see if Mr. Bishop can be linked to this commercial break.
